What is interior design?
Interior design focusses on the internal spaces of a building and helps to ensure these spaces maximise their potential for the use they are intended for. Using the skills of an interior designer will help the space be successful. Interior designers can be used for many different types of projects for example designing a practical open plan office, a themed bedroom, designing a room around a particular historical feature in a commercial building.
Usually the designer meets the client to discuss their needs. Depending upon the scope of the project, an interior designer can also liaise with contractors and suppliers. Their clients range from home owners, businesses, hotels, restaurants, builders, property developers and architects.
What should I think about when designing an internal space?
The list is endless but here are a few ideas to get your creative juices flowing! The age, style of the building, the building’s external appearance, the environment outside the building, the function / functions of the space you need help with and the needs of the people who will be using it, lighting, entrance to the space, natural light, any structural alterations, what sort of look and finish you want to achieve, type of heating, colours, fabrics, furniture, period features, flooring, noise levels, walls, ceilings, decoration, types of window, storage, room layout, pipes, drainage, electrics, disabled access, budgets and financial constraints, fire and safety precautions.
Appointing an interior designer
It is a good idea to see a couple of designers before you appoint someone. You can find out what sort of projects they have worked on before and if there are any similar to your own. By talking to them about your project you can hopefully find an interior designer who will be able to interpret your ideas the way you would like. Remember to check they have suitable insurance and if you wish you can ask for references from previous clients.
