What is an Acoustic Report?
An acoustic report assesses the noise and impact of that noise for any situation where noise is thought to be an issue. The most common areas for assessment are industrial noise that will affect residents, construction site noise, environmental noise, vibration in buildings, sound transmission in buildings and transportation noise. Sometimes data needs to be collected over a period of time.
When Would I Need an Acoustic Report?
Often planning applications for new developments require an acoustic survey and report in order for the planning application to be successful. If the proposed development is near a railway line you may also need to get a vibration assessment. In other scenarios, noise generating equipment such as air conditioning, kitchen extractor fans and heat pumps may also require noise levels to be assessed.
Sometimes religious sites may need an acoustic report as well as places of entertainment; night clubs, bars, pubs, wedding venues, car racing and motocross sites. Often places like these will need regular monitoring especially if they are a new development or are being expanded.
It is advisable to check with the local planning authority what they require and study the relevant planning policy guidance which in most cases will be found on the relevant local authority website.
Why do I need an Acoustic Report?
Because the proposed development will create noise that is likely to have an adverse impact on existing premises
Because the development may be noise sensitive such as a proposed residential development near a railway, motorway, airport or industrial site
Because there are potential noise problems that may occur in the future on the new or existing development and what measures may be used to prevent these noise issues occurring.
What does an Acoustic Report cover?
An acoustic engineer will provide advice on what needs to be assessed but generally speaking the report will need to cover a number of points some of which are outlined below;
The existing noise environment
Impact of noise sources
Hours and methods of working
The distance between noise source and receptor
Boundary noise limits
Building orientation and construction
Noise barriers and other noise attenuation measures
